Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Quick Guide for Your Cycle

STEP 1: TRACK YOUR OVULATION
Start LH testing:
- The day after your period stops
- Test morning & evening
If taking letrozole or Clomid:
- Take on Cycle Days 3–7
- Start LH testing on Cycle Day 8
Positive LH surge?
- Call Dr. Wong immediately
- Ovulation happens 24–36 hours later
- IUI will be scheduled that evening or the next day
USING FROZEN SPERM?
Before Ovulation:
- Use a 1-week sperm tank
- Ship to your home or pick up 2–3 days before expected surge
Day of IUI:
- Bring the tank to your appointment
- Do NOT open it
- Dr. Wong will thaw the specimen in-office
If using Seattle Sperm Bank:
- Ensure Dr. Wong completes the Release of Sperm form
DAY OF PROCEDURE
Sperm preparation: 20 min
You may leave briefly (walk, coffee, tea)
The procedure (≈10 minutes):
- Speculum placed
- Small catheter passes through cervix
- Sperm placed into uterus
Afterward:
- Rest 20 minutes
- Optional acupuncture
- Then you may go home
AFTER YOUR IUI
Today:
- Take it easy
- Avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise
- Working is okay if needed
Normal symptoms:
- Mild cramping (up to 4 days)
- Light spotting (1–2 days)
Tomorrow:
- Resume normal activities
CALL OR GO TO ER IF YOU HAVE:
- Fever
- Severe abdominal pain
- Heavy bleeding
- Nausea or vomiting
(Rare, but important)
