Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Quick Guide for Your Cycle

STEP 1: TRACK YOUR OVULATION

Start LH testing:

  • The day after your period stops
  • Test morning & evening

If taking letrozole or Clomid:

  • Take on Cycle Days 3–7
  • Start LH testing on Cycle Day 8

Positive LH surge?

  • Call Dr. Wong immediately
  • Ovulation happens 24–36 hours later
  • IUI will be scheduled that evening or the next day

USING FROZEN SPERM?

Before Ovulation:

  • Use a 1-week sperm tank
  • Ship to your home or pick up 2–3 days before expected surge

Day of IUI:

  • Bring the tank to your appointment
  • Do NOT open it
  • Dr. Wong will thaw the specimen in-office

If using Seattle Sperm Bank:

  • Ensure Dr. Wong completes the Release of Sperm form

DAY OF PROCEDURE

Sperm preparation: 20 min

You may leave briefly (walk, coffee, tea)

The procedure (≈10 minutes):

  • Speculum placed
  • Small catheter passes through cervix
  • Sperm placed into uterus

Afterward:

  • Rest 20 minutes
  • Optional acupuncture
  • Then you may go home

AFTER YOUR IUI

Today:

  • Take it easy
  • Avoid heavy lifting or intense exercise
  • Working is okay if needed

Normal symptoms:

  • Mild cramping (up to 4 days)
  • Light spotting (1–2 days)

Tomorrow:

  • Resume normal activities

CALL OR GO TO ER IF YOU HAVE:

  • Fever
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Nausea or vomiting

(Rare, but important)
