Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Patient Instructions & Timeline
Cycle Start
Cycle Day 1
- First day of full menstrual flow.
Ovulation Induction (If Prescribed)
Cycle Days 3–7
- Take letrozole or clomiphene (Clomid) as directed.
LH Tracking
When to Start
- Begin LH testing twice daily (morning and evening).
- The day after your menstrual flow stops, OR
- Cycle Day 8 if using letrozole or Clomid.
Important
- Use the same brand of LH tests throughout the cycle.
- Test morning and evening for best accuracy.
Positive LH Surge
- Notify Dr. Wong immediately at 360-972-0316.
- Ovulation usually occurs 24–36 hours after the surge.
IUI Scheduling
- Your IUI will be scheduled for the evening of your LH surge, OR
- The following day.
Partner / Donor Instructions
Before Collection
- Abstain from ejaculation for 2–4 days before the IUI.
Sample Collection Options
- At home using a sterile collection cup.
- Sample must arrive at the office within 30 minutes.
- Keep the sample at body temperature.
- Do not use seat warmers.
- Carry the sample under your armpit or between your thighs.
- In-office collection is available if you cannot arrive within 30 minutes.
Day of IUI
Sperm Preparation
- Takes approximately 30–60 minutes.
- You may take a walk or get coffee or tea.
- Dr. Wong will notify you when to return.
The Procedure
- Similar to a Pap smear.
- A speculum is placed.
- A thin, sterile catheter passes through the cervix.
- Sperm is placed into the uterus near the fallopian tubes.
- Procedure time is approximately 10 minutes.
After the Procedure
- Rest on the table for 20 minutes.
- Acupuncture is available during this time if desired.
- You may then leave the office.
Aftercare
Day of IUI
- Rest and take it easy.
- You may work if needed.
- Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.
What’s Normal
- Mild cramping (intermittent, up to 4 days).
- Mild spotting (up to 1–2 days).
Next Day
- Resume normal activities.
Risks & When to Seek Care
Risks are rare but may include infection or uterine perforation.
Go to the Emergency Room if you experience:
- Fever
- Severe abdominal pain
- Heavy bleeding
- Nausea or vomiting
